Clac! does not collect your data. Everything the app keeps stays on your iPhone. Your folds are also kept in your own private iCloud, where only you can see them, and sync across the iPhones on your Apple Account.
What Clac! keeps on your iPhone
- The date and time of each fold and unfold, your time zone offset, and whether it came from the hinge, your Shortcuts automation or your steps.
- With each fold and unfold: a restart id and the time since your iPhone last restarted (used to spot a changed clock), a random id for this install of Clac!, and a running number.
- With each fold made from steps: the day the steps were walked and the fold’s number that day, so two iPhones never count the same steps twice.
- Your daily sheets, your collection of origami and your trades, kept in the same fold log.
- Your steps ledger: the step count of each of the last 7 days, and when you turned steps on or off.
- Your Crease Check answers (iPhone Duo), each with your fold count at the time.
- Your settings, such as paper sounds, haptics and notifications.
- Your iPhone’s model and whether it has a hinge, so a backup restored onto another model sets that iPhone up again.
- Whether you own the unlock.
iCloud
When iCloud is on for Clac!, your fold log, and with it your collection, is kept in the private iCloud database of your Apple Account and syncs across the iPhones you use Clac! on, so it comes back if you reinstall Clac! or change iPhone. With it go your total folds and finished origami (for Welcome back) and a counter Clac! uses to read iCloud’s clock. Apple stores them for you; we can’t see them. Your step counts, your settings and your Crease Check answers never go to iCloud. To stop, turn off Clac! in iOS Settings > your name > iCloud.
- Welcome back: a new install with no folds that finds your history in iCloud brings it back to this iPhone.
- Start Fresh, on Welcome back: this iPhone starts a new history. The earlier one stays in iCloud for your other iPhones and won’t come back to this one.
- Restore from iCloud…, in Settings > iCloud Sync when iCloud holds another history: it replaces the folds on this iPhone with that history and keeps the current ones as a backup copy on this iPhone.
Steps and Health
On an iPhone without a hinge, if you allow it, Clac! reads your step count from Health (iPhone and Apple Watch) and from Motion & Fitness, on your iPhone, to turn every 500 steps into a fold. It reads nothing else from Health and never writes to it. Your step count never leaves your iPhone. Only the folds go to your iCloud: the time of each one, the day its steps were walked and its number that day.
In the background
- Steps: now and then iOS lets Clac! read your steps in the background, in one background refresh. iOS decides when. Folds it finds are added on your iPhone, as above.
- iPhone Duo: the Shortcuts automation you add (When iPhone is closed: Log Fold) runs on your iPhone and records the fold there, as above.
Notifications
Clac! has one notification, and only if you allow it: “Your origami is finished”, when a sheet finishes while Clac! isn’t open. Your iPhone makes it. There are no push notifications and no server. Turn it off in Clac! Settings > Notifications.
The unlock
The one-time unlock is bought through Apple’s App Store. Apple handles the payment; Clac! only learns whether the unlock is owned. Restore Purchases asks Apple again. With Family Sharing, your family can use it too.
Sharing, stickers, wallpapers and app icons
Pictures of your origami, stickers, wallpapers and Make it yourself instructions leave Clac! only when you share or save them through the iOS share sheet, to the place you pick. Clac! uploads nothing. App icons change on your iPhone only.
Send Feedback, in Settings > About, opens your mail app with the Clac! version, your iPhone model and your iOS version filled in. Nothing goes out until you send it.
Rating
After your 3rd and your 10th finished origami, Clac! may show Apple’s own rating prompt. Apple handles it; Clac! doesn’t see your answer.
What Clac! doesn’t do
- It doesn’t create an account.
- It doesn’t use the internet, except your own iCloud (above) and Apple’s App Store when you buy or restore the unlock. Links you tap, such as Add for the shortcut or Rate Clac!, open in Shortcuts, the App Store or Safari.
- It doesn’t use analytics, advertising or tracking, and it contains no third-party code.
- It doesn’t share your data with anyone, including us.
Widgets
The Clac! widgets only read today’s paper and your counts from your iPhone.
Backups
If you back up your iPhone, Clac!’s data is included in that backup, like any other app’s. Restored onto another iPhone model, Clac! keeps your folds, collection, unlock and settings, and asks again about steps, the Shortcuts automation and notifications.
Deleting
Deleting Clac! removes its data from your iPhone, except two items in your iPhone’s Keychain, which stay on this iPhone and never sync, so a reinstall picks up where you were:
- The random number your daily origami are drawn from, so a reinstall gets the same sheets.
- iCloud Sync’s notes: the random numbers of fold histories this iPhone has left, and the id iCloud gives Clac! for your Apple Account.
None of them says who you are. Your folds stay in your iCloud, so they can come back; you can delete them there in iOS Settings, under iCloud storage.
Children
Clac! collects nothing from anyone, including children.
